Cancer Society support available to patients and families in Taranaki: Advocacy The support Coordinator is available to assist with any difficulties you may be experiencing as a result of your cancer diagnosis. This may be assistance with obtaining benefits, dealing with health providers, or other agencies. Information There is a wide range of information available in our centre for people who have been diagnosed or have concerns about cancer. Including disease specific & treatment specific information booklets, diet and nutrition information, and information on other services available. We also hold Living with Cancer workshops to help people find ways to adjust to life with cancer. These are all available free of charge. Carer relief volunteers We have a network of volunteer support people who are available to stay with the person with cancer to enable the full time carer to have time out to do shopping / visiting etc. Volunteers who work with the Society come from all walks of life and have received specialised training. They are available to assist by sitting with patients and relieving caregivers, transport, shopping etc. Help with light housekeeping or gardening may also be available. Transport Volunteer drivers are available to drive patients to appointments at Taranaki Base, & Hawera hospitals. They will also do drives to the supermarket, doctors and for other special requirements. We also operate a shuttle service that travels 2 weekly to and from the cancer treatment centre in Palmerston North. Cancer Connect NZ This free service arranges peer support phone calls for people living with cancer and their caregivers. It provides a listening ear, practical information and the opportunity to talk to someone else whose life has been affected by cancer. Cancer Information Service Help provided by oncology nurses on all aspect of cancer and its treatment Both services available at: 0800 800 426 9.00 am – 5.00 pm, Monday -Friday Support Groups The Taranaki Centre has a number of support groups including breast cancer, general, and a men’s group. A prostate group is also recently started up in Waitara.
