Building ProjectA new purpose built Cancer Support and Education Centre for Taranaki!
The mission of this project is to: to create an environmentally sustainable and healthy space for the delivery of professional, proactive & responsive services, to improve wellbeing and reduce the impact of cancer in our community.
The Cancer Society has been operating out of its current premises in Lorna Street since 1994. By 2000 it was becoming apparent that the space was not suitable for purpose and as a growing organisation, it would not meet our needs for much longer. Investigations into options for upgrading began in 2001, but it was not until October 2006 that a decision was made to start with a clean slate and build from new.
In November 2006 Boon Goldsmith Bhaskar Team Architecture where engaged to under take the design work. They are well known for their innvovative, iconic yet simple designs, which was exactly what we were looking for. We wanted a building that was practical, functional and would met our needs both now and in the future. The building is designed to be low maintenance, have the lowest possible running costs and be flexible and scalable going into the future. Environmental sustainability was also seen as an important factor as natural resources are limited and environmental well being is an important part of the community well being bigger picture which we promote. The building is designed very much with this in mind.
Construction started in April 2008, and is due to be completed in November 2008. The building will provide a vital base for Cancer Society programmes and activities, as well as being a point for information and support for the community.
