Vital health decision
The Cancer Society is welcoming the introduction of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine onto the immunisation schedule, saying the vaccine has been approved and available, but not universally accessible in New Zealand, since 2006.
"Each year in New Zealand about 200 women develop cervical cancer and about 66 die of the disease," said Health Promotion Manager, Dr Jan Pearson. As far as we are concerned including this vaccine on the schedule is a welcome move....

Bad weather did not put dampner on community spirit
The Cancer Society Relay For life was held in New Plymouth on the weekend, and despite the appalling weather the event still went off well. 65 teams from around the region had members walking around the track for the 24 hours – even in the rain....

NZ CANCER CONTROL COUNCIL URGES PUBLIC TO STAY SUNSMART
Summer is not over and the danger of skin cancer can not be underestimated, Chair of the New Zealand Cancer Control Council Dame Cath Tizard said today.
The focus in recent weeks on the efficacy of sun screens has concerned the council.
"While it appears that there are some issues around the exact level of protection offered by some sunscreens it is important to remember that applying sunscreen is only one of the things people need to do to protect themselves from skin cancer"....

Melanoma deaths on the rise in Taranaki
The number of people dying of melanoma in Taranaki has shot up by 85 percent over four years. The latest Ministry of Health provisional statistics show that in 2005, 13 Taranaki people died from melanoma, up from seven in 2002.
Melanoma can affect anyone, and often strikes people in the prime of their lives. In 2002, four of the deaths were men and three were women. In 2005, nine men and six women died from melanoma, two of whom were under 50...

Town turns pink to support breast cancer awareness month!
On the weekend the Taranaki Centre in association with the NP Rodders club and More FM held a very successful event to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer.
Suitably named "Pink your ride" the event involved participants 'pinking up' their cars and themselves, and joining in a street parade through the CBD. This was followed by a 'pink' mini market, and tea party....

We have moved!
In order to make way for the new building, and so that the old one can be relocated the Cancer Society has moved from TSB House. We can now be found at 120 Cutfield Road, almost at the corner of Cutfield and Tukapa Street....

Taranaki Centre recieves TSB grant for building project
Taranaki Centre was delighted to learn in early October that our funding application to TSB Community Trust for the new building was Successful. They have granted $750,000 from their 2008/09 budget which is just over 50% of the funding required....

Society sights on modern headquarters
It's been a long time coming but the Taranaki Cancer Society is confident its planned new premises will open next year.
The $1.5 million project will see a modern, environmentally sustainable centre on the society's Lorna St site. The idea of a purpose-built facility for the charity was first mooted in 2001.
And while the society is still going through funding applications for the project, the plans are drawn up and the group will move to a temporary location early next month....

No surprise for the Cancer Society
While there are no great surprises for the Cancer Society in the latest statistics showing cancer as the leading cause of death in New Zealand, there are concerns that highlight the need for better access to specialists, medical treatment and drugs.
The Ministry of Health today issued figures showing a 3.6 per cent increase in registrations in 2002-2003 representing 18,586 new cancer patients...
